Safety Policy
Active Shooter:
Run:
Exit at the Fire Escape doors located on either side of the building. From the sanctuary, the closest exit is on the Grange Ally side of the building. From the Coffee area and kitchen the closest exit is on the parking lot side of the building. If you are in the kitchen or kids area, you may also exit from the front door.
Leave regardless of what others do. Do not stop to retrieve your possessions.
If you cannot RUN, then Hide.
Hide:
Stay out of active shooter’s view.
Silence phones and stay quite.
Position yourself for the element of surprise.
Consider escape routes.
If possible, do not let anyone in, the shooter could be outside.
Fight:
Sudden, aggressive and violent action against shooter.
Once engaged, remain engaged.
Throw objects at or use objects to strike/hit the shooter.
Yell, scream and be strong minded.
Group tackle/assault if possible.
If you are able to get to the fire extinguisher, discharge it at the intruder to take them off guard.
We have installed a Greeter who will stay in the Greeting Area until the door is locked. When service has started, they will remain close to the entrance to let in late comers into the service. This will give us the opportunity to access a possible intruder and intercept the intruder if possible before they can enter the sanctuary area. If the Greeter feels there is a questionable person, he/she should get another person to join them before approaching the possible intruder.
We have set up partitions that will act as a visual block between the front door and the sanctuary. This will hopefully allow a few extra seconds to react to a shooting event.
There is a slide bolt on the inside of the kids room door that faces the front door. If a situation should arise, bolt the door from the inside and stay low and quiet. If possible, escape through the side fire escape door.
The Church phone is located on the green cabinet in the coffee area near the black board wall under the dish cabinet. Person closest to the phone should dial 911.
We will call 911 at the first sign of any violent interruption. Members will be made aware that our street address is 174 S. Main St., but our location is best described as the corner of Grange Alley and Midway St. Members will be advised that such a situation warrants leaving the building by any means possible, as well as barricading doors and defending oneself as needed. Also, the door between the Greeting Area and the Fellowship Area should be closed, and if possible, there is also a slide lock on the inside of the Greeting Area door, slide the bolt to deter intruder from going into the sanctuary.
In the event of an intruder, if possible, the Greeter, or person closest to the light switches near the greeting area, should switch the lights out as a sign there is trouble. At that point everyone in the sanctuary area and coffee area should take the Active Shooter protocol.
We will practice a fire drill at each of the three Congregational meetings during the liturgical year. During the fire drills we will quickly exit the building out of the side doors. Those who are able should exit first and assist others down the stairs.
Please note: the stage doors at the front of the sanctuary are NOT EXITS. There is no easy way out of the building at the stage area.

Food Policy
If food is brought for the service, it must be either completely consumed or what is left is to be given to someone to take home. (This being secured before the bringer leaves). If no one is interested in taking the leftovers, then the bringer must take the leftovers home to be eaten there. Food should not be left at the church thinking that it will be eaten or to be put in the fridge to be eaten later, which it is almost never eaten later. After seeing the amount of food that was left in fridge and cabinet, I think if we are going to buy snacks to be left at the church to use at a Sunday service, that is fine, as long as they are not opened. If someone brings in sliced cheese for example to keep on hand for after service, one or two packages are fine. But once they are opened, they either need to be eaten or sent home with someone to be finished. The same with crackers, or pretzels, etc. It is fine to have a box or bag of dry snacks on hand, not too many, and once they are opened, they need to be eaten or sent home with someone.
Things such as condiments; ketchup, mustard, grated parmesan cheese, butter, etc. These can be left on hand, but at the beginning of each liturgical year, we need to go through them and anything that is extremely out of date should be taken to be used up by someone or composted.
If a bottle of soda, juice or other type of beverage is brought to the church for a service or event, it must be completely used or taken home by the bringer or someone who will use it. Again, this must be determined before everyone leaves the building. There are to be no open beverage containers in the refrigerator.
Items brought for PERSONAL USE are to be marked with a name and date. If you bring food for yourself, please remember to take it home with you when you leave.
There certainly will be exceptions to this policy, like after a fundraising event or party, but as a general rule, we need to remain diligent about our food usage and waste.
